Tour Hosts manages prestigious Naval Congress
Naval Sentiment runs high
Professional
Conference Organiser Tour Hosts was proud to manage The Pacific 2006
Congress, incorporating the International Maritime Conference
and Sea Power Conference. This conference occurs every two years and ran
from 31st January – 3rd February, 2006 at Sydney Convention and Exhibition
Centre. This is an ongoing relationship for Tour Hosts who were the
also the PCO for the conference in 2004.
On the opening day of the conference, just outside the convention centre, the Beat to Quarters and Sunset Ceremony were performed. These naval ceremonies are perhaps the oldest and most traditional. Steeped in naval history, they now usually conclude days of special importance. Ceremonial Sunset is traditionally maintained by navies throughout the world to salute the lowering of the Ensign at the close of the day.
Three
Australian Naval ships (HMAS Armidale, Hawkesbury and Townsville) were stationed
in Darling Harbour for the duration of the Conference and the Ceremony took
place on and around the ships. The Navy band played traditional ceremonial
music including the Australian National Anthem and Waltzing Matilda whilst
thousands of delegates and spectators looked on.
It was hard to contain emotion when naval officers and crew saluted as the Ensign was lowered. One member of the public, Fiona Dawson said “I’ve never seen this ceremony before, It brought a tear to my eye and pride in being an Australia knowing that such fine men and women are looking out for us”.
