Biotechnology improves wool and milk

Minister John Brumby at the press conference

The Agricultural Biotechnology International Conference (ABIC) was held early August 2006 in Melbourne at the Melbourne Convention Centre. This was the first time this conference was held in the Southern Hemisphere and the Victorian Government was principle sponsor and host state.

Throughout the conference and exhibition a number of important biotechnology advances came to light which show the wide reach of this topic and the implications to all.

CSIRO announced that they had isolated genes which makes it possible to increase useable wool production in sheep, by breading out inefficient low wool producing animals. This type of technology will help keep Australia a world leading sheep producer.

On-site at the conference a press conference was hosted by The Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development and John Brumby, Minister for State and Regional Development and Minister for Innovation and industry scientists attended. Announced at the press conference was the discovery of the gene in the DNA of Australia’s own Wallaby milk that is 100% more effective than penicillin.

Once again, proof that Australia hosting important international conferences brings in more than just increased tourism dollars, it also is an opportunity to showcase our leading research and development.

The ABIC Conference was managed by Professional Conference Organiser Tour Hosts whose Managing Director Roslyn McLeod said "we've managed many biotechnology conferences ranging from Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering, Biomaterials, Eye Research, Developmental Biology to Agricultural Biotechnology. What's so exciting is to see the benefits to all that come out of the groundbreaking research these vital industries create. One of the great experiences that comes from being a meetings manager is working with and learning from our talented clients doing great research. Australia is often at the forefront of discovery in these meetings."
