Incorporating 10th Annual Australasian Fire Authorities Council Conference
Urban and Rural Communities living in Fire Prone Environments: Managing
the Future of Global Problems.
Invitation
Message from the President, Australasian Fire Authorities Council
On behalf of members of the Australasian Fire Authorities Council (AFAC),
it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Third International
Wildland Fire Conference and to the beautiful harbour city of Sydney.
Perhaps now more than ever before, we receive constant reminders that
we are members of a global community and that the challenges we face
can be overcome through collective effort.
It is both fitting and timely then that the world’s fire management
professionals come together to explore global solutions to the problems
that are common to us all. Whether it is through discussion on balancing
the conflicts that are ever present in the environments in which our
industry operates, or the ways in which we can work together towards
developing common standards and principles, the real beneficiaries
of this conference will be the communities we serve across the globe.
The organising committee has worked tirelessly to develop a program
that will both stimulate and challenge. I am confident that the combination
of conference program and exhibition will deliver both objectives in
an unparalleled setting.
The Third International Wildland Fire Conference is an opportunity
for fire management professionals involved in land management, rural
and urban environments, to come together and learn in a spirit of fellowship
and goodwill. Welcome again to you all.

President, Australasian Fire Authorities Council
Message from the 3rd International Wildland Conference Steering and
Organising Committee
At the time of writing, much of eastern and western Australia is recovering
from a spate of major bushfires that engulfed more than 500 homes in
the nation’s capital, Canberra, and burned over a million hectares
of high country in the Australian alps. At the height of the crises
more than 6000 firefighters from all over the nation, New Zealand and
the United States battled over several hundred blazes. Traumatic as
these fires are, they do illustrate in a very real way the value of
events such as the 3rd International Wildland Fire and 10th Annual
Australasian Fire Authorities Council Conference (AFAC) and Exhibition
being held in Sydney from 3-6 October 2003.
Crises of this magnitude are not rare events. In one form or another,
whether through the experience of wildland fire or fires in an urban
setting, fire management professionals around the world confront the
same problems on a regular basis. Fire managers attempt to strike the
same delicate balance between similar areas of conflict, struggle to
achieve the same compromises and strive to fashion effective solutions
in environments characterised by similar demands.
The 3rd International Wildland Fire Conference, incorporating the 10th
Annual Australasian Fire Authorities Council (AFAC) Conference, will
provide fire managers and practitioners with the unique opportunity
of discussing these common problems on a global scale. Together with
your peers, you will be able to make a real contribution to the development
of the definitive global outcomes and solutions that will guide our
industry into the future.
Experiencing such a high calibre Conference and Exhibition in the stunning
city of Sydney, Australia will provide you with memories that you will
value for years to come. Along with our hosts, the North American Forest
Commission Fire Management Working Group, the National Fire Protection
Association and the Australasian Fire Authorities Council, we look
forward to your participation and welcoming you to Sydney in October
2003.
