Scientific Program
The Scientific Program for ASC/NZSA 2006 includes Plenary Sessions, Invited Paper Sessions, Contributed Paper Sessions and Poster Sessions. Short Courses will also be available.
› Plenary Sessions
There are four plenary sessions of 75 minutes duration. The three keynote speakers and the Foreman Lecturer will each present a 60 minute talk at one of the plenary sessions, with the remaining time being devoted to discussion or conference activities such as opening and closing.
› Invited Paper Sessions
The Invited Paper Sessions, which are of 105 minutes duration, have been developed by the Program Committee. An Organiser has been selected for each Invited Paper Session. There are two invited authors for each Invited Paper Session who will present 45 minute talks, with the remainder of time being allocated to discussion. Invited Paper Session Organisers are able to determine the discussion format. Other formats such as panel discussions are possible, subject to the approval of the Program Committee.
› Contributed Paper and Poster Sessions
Any person attending the ASC/NZSA 2006 Conference may submit a paper for presentation either in person at a Contributed Paper Session or as a poster at a Poster Session. More than one paper may be submitted for presentation.
Papers will not be refereed, but the Program Committee may refuse to include papers which are not suitable. The Program Committee will arrange the Contributed Paper Sessions. To assist in this, authors must provide keywords within their abstract body and their idea of a classification for the topic of their paper. The final program will be based on papers which are submitted. The Program Committee will allocate each paper to the most appropriate session. In some cases this may include recommending that a paper submitted for presentation at a Contributed Paper Session be transferred to presentation at a Poster Session.
Contributed Paper Sessions are of 105 minutes duration allowing for 5 talks of 15 minutes with 5 minutes discussion, plus 5 minutes of changeover time.
There will be one Poster Session each day during lunch time when presenters will be expected to be available to discuss their poster.
There will not be conference proceedings. Presenters are strongly encouraged to submit their papers to the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics. All papers will be subject to the usual review process.
> Special Sessions for Young Statisticans
The conference strongly encourages participation by young statisticians and there are two important activities on the program especially for them. As part of the Welcome Reception on Monday evening there will be "young statistician's corner" where those new to the the Australian and New Zealand conferences can meet other recent members of the Associations. This will be a great chance to 'break the ice' and meet your younger colleagues.
There will also be a whole session on Monday afternoon (TBC) for young statistician at which a series of 15 minute presentations on interesting topics encountered by the speakers in their work. This ession is being organized by Jason Thomas of Statistics New Zealand and Ian Wood of Queensland Univertiy of Technology and speakers include: Richard Hutchinson (Covance), Petra Kuhnert (CSIRO Mathematics and Information Sciences), Victoria Wei (Statistics New Zealand) and Janice Wooton (Australian Bureau of Statistics).
Additional speakers will be announced in the future.
These sessions have been scheduled early in the conference to maximise networking among young statisticians!
If you are a new to the conference and would like to make a presentation there are options for contributed talks and contributed poster sessions.
The poster sessions are a great way to meet other people.
