PROFESSOR RICHARD TEESE
Director, Centre for Post-Compulsory Educational Lifelong Learning
The University of Melbourne, Australia

Richard Teese is Professor of Post-Compulsory Education and Training in the University of Melbourne. He is a specialist in student achievement, school programs, and transition to further education and work. He has had a long career studying equity in school systems. His contributions to research and theory have included Equity Outcomes (1993), Who Wins at School? Girls and Boys in Australian Secondary Education (1995), Academic Success and Social Power: Examinations and Inequality (2000) and Undemocratic Schooling: Equity and Quality in Mass Secondary Education in Australia (2003) (with John Polesel). His policy research includes work to improve the equity dimensions of school global budgets in Victoria (with Steve Lamb), background research for the review of the South Australian Certificate of Education, and studies of VET participation and tertiary aspirations. Richard is director of the On Track project in Victoria, which monitors the destinations of about 40,000 school leavers each year, and is assisting the Education Departments in both New South Wales and Queensland on destination tracking projects. In May this year, Richard was rapporteur for the OECD review of equity programs in Spain.

Paul Brock has been an educator for 39 years: as a secondary school teacher, departmental head and deputy principal; academic; ministerial adviser, Member of the National Board of Employment, Education and Training; and a Senior Executive of the NSW Department of Education and Training. Dr Brock is an Honorary Research Fellow, University of New England, an elected Fellow of the Australian College of Educators, a Director of the Board of the Motor Neurone Disease Association of NSW and a life member of the English Teachers’ Association of NSW. Paul Brock was awarded the Australian College of Educators Sir Harold Wyndham Medal in 2002 for his career-long contribution to education. In April 2004 Dr Brock was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Educational Studies by James Cook University for what the citation called “exceptional contributions to the advancement of human well-being”.

ANN MCINTYRE
Director of Professional Learning and Leadership Development , NSW Department of Education and Training.

Ann came to this position having been the Director of Bondi School Education Area and leading the diverse schools of the area through a major period of change for four years.

Prior to this, Ann was a school principal for eight years. During her principalship, the school and Ann received numerous awards and in a Quality Assurance Report it was stated “this school is on the leading edge of best practices in teaching and learning”.

Ann is committed to professional learning and leadership development to improve outcomes for students to build public confidence in public education.

Jeff McMullen

Writer, film-maker and journalist, Jeff McMullen spent almost two decades as an ABC foreign correspondent and Four Corners reporter, then another sixteen years travelling the world for Sixty Minutes. His commitment to improving the health and education of Indigenous people here and in other countries spans this professional lifetime.

For the last four years Jeff has been Director (gratis) of Ian Thorpe’s Fountain for Youth Trust working closely with the World Swimming champion and raising their voices together to get improved health and education for Indigenous people.

Jeff has worked with many communities from Chris Sara’s Cherbourg School in Queensland to the Sunrise Health Service in Jawoyn country east of Katherine in the Northern Territory.

He has helped eatablish the Riverbend Readers Challenge and the Literacy for Life scheme to improve the education of Indigenous children. His partner, Kim Hoggard, and children, Claire and Will, have set out to show that every Australian family can contribute in some small way to the improvement of the health and well being of all of our children.

SISTA SHE - PERFORMERS, WRITERS, SUPERSTARS

“Picture this…Phat beats, white tracksuits, 80’s rap dance moves and hilarious hip hop rhymes….Sheila MC EILA and Rasheda EDA MC of SISTA SHE have arrived and they be spreading sista philosophy in rhyme.”

Sista She came together in April of 2002, and are fast becoming a phenomenon with successful seasons at both the Melbourne Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festivals, and shows at various music venues up and down the east coast. Recent performances include seasons at the Sydney Opera House and Brisbane Powerhouse, as well as performing at Federation Square and Big Day Out 2005.

Who are SISTA SHE…really?

Candy Bowers (RASHEDA EDA MC) and Sarah Ward (SHEILA MC EILA) have trained and worked in the entertainment industry for over 5 years. Candy has an acting degree from NIDA and Sarah an Acting Diploma from The Actor’s Centre Australia. Both Sarah and Candy have performed on stage and screen as actors, singers, comedians and hip hop artists.

As well as performing as special guests in the main program, Sista She will work together with the Student Equity Advisory Team (SEAT) to explore Equity and Student Voices in PSFP schools.
