Invitation G'day from Sydney, Australia. It is with great pleasure that I invite you to register for the 55th Session of the International Statistical Institute, which will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre from 5 to 12 April 2005. The 2005 ISI Session is open to all those interested in statistical matters, particularly members of the ISI and its Sections. The ISI has held Sessions biennially since 1853 bringing together academic, government and private sector statisticians and related experts from various fields. The Sessions provide an opportunity for statisticians to attend scientific meetings focusing on their own speciality. At the same time they can absorb new research in other statistical fields that may have unanticipated applications to their own speciality. Many have spoken of the valuable 'cross pollination' of ideas that they have experienced during the ISI Session. A diverse and cutting edge Scientific Program has been developed for the 2005 ISI Session and includes Invited Paper Meetings, Contributed Paper Meetings, key note speakers of world repute, Poster Sessions, Tutorials and Short Courses. Theme days will cover Statistics and Finance, Environmental Statistics and Genomics. There are several Satellite meetings being arranged either before or after the ISI Session in either Sydney, Cairns,New Zealand or New Caledonia. By combining the ISI Session with one of the Satellite meetings you may be able to get greater value from the time you will spend travelling to and in Australia. The 2005 National Organising Committee is planning an excellent Social Program to give you the opportunity to relax, experience Australian hospitality and network with other delegates. There are many good value activities to enjoy around Sydney and further afield. For those of you who want to stay in Australia a bit longer, I recommend some of the prime tourist spots like the Red Centre, the Great Barrier Reef and Kakadu National Park. Sydney is an exciting, cosmopolitan city, located on one of the largest and most beautiful harbours in the world. Come and see why Sydney has been voted "the world's best city" and why in 2000 it hosted a wonderful Olympic Games. Register by 31 January 2005 and take advantage of the early bird registration fee. So start planning now, and I will look forward to welcoming you in what is, in my view, the most beautiful city in the world.
