Cairns is 17 degrees south of the Equator.

Great Barrier Reef

Cairns is the closest departure point to the Great Barrier Reef. The reef is accessible from Cairns, Port Douglas, Palm Cove and Mission Beach.

World Heritage Rainforests

The region boasts some of the richest rainforest in the world covering 900,000 hectares. The region's tropical rainforests are protected under World Heritage listing. Best known - World Heritage rainforests around Mossman, Daintree, Cape Tribulation, Mission Beach and Atherton Tablelands.

Climate

Cairns boasts a superb tropical climate all year round. An average maximum daytime temperature is for August of 26˚C and an average minimum of 16˚C.

Currency

Decimal currency is used in Australia with the dollar as the basic unit (100 cents = $1) Notes come in $100, $50, $20, $10, and $5. Coins come in 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 denominations. Currency exchange facilities are available in most banks, hotels and airports and operate normal business hours.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are accepted at most restaurants and shops, the most widely used being MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Diners Club.

Electricity

Electrical current is 240/250V, AC 50Hz. The Australian three-pin power outlet is different from that in many countries, so you will need an adaptor.
