Conference Overview

As host of APEC in 2007, Australia will convene the fifth 'Secure Trade in the APEC Region' Conference (STAR V), to be held in Sydney 27- 28 June 2007.  Australia looks forward to your participation in the Conference, which will develop recommendations for APEC Ministers and Leaders on ways to enhance the safe and secure movement of people and trade within the APEC region.

STAR Conferences are designed as a platform for dialogue between the public and private sectors on issues and concerns relevant to the secure movement of people and trade within the APEC region.  They form a key part of APEC’s counter-terrorism agenda.

The over-arching theme for STAR V, "Mitigating Risks: Containing Costs", acknowledges the need to find cost-effective solutions for the provision of enhanced security for trade and people movement.

The development of 'partnerships' between the public and private sectors will be a major focus of STAR V. This recognizes that, in an increasingly integrated and inter-dependent APEC region, public authorities cannot work to enhance security for people and trade without input and cooperation from the private sector, and vice versa.

The Conference will focus on two main streams:

(i) security of identity
(ii) security of the supply chain

Speakers will focus on cross cutting issues such as:
