Submission of Abstracts

The Organising Committee of the MWIA, Western Pacific Regional Congress 2008 invites you to submit an abstract(s) for consideration as an oral or poster presentation.
Abstracts may be submitted under any of the following 6 themes:
- The Environment & Health
- Impact of Violence/War/Terrorism on Women & Children
- Professional Issues for Women in Medicine
- Innovations in Health Promotion
- Infections & Vaccines
- Advocacy & Health Politics
Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words and must be written in the Enter Abstract Text box during the abstract submission process.

Summary of Abstract Submission Instructions
Please read through the submission instructions listed below before preparing your abstract:
Step 1: Read the General Policies and Requirements for the submission of abstracts.
Step 2: Write your abstract following the Abstract Format & Layout Guidelines.
Step 3: Click on the button below to complete the Abstract Submission Form.
Step 4: Fill in the abstract details, ensuring that the abstract text is inserted in the box under the heading Enter Abstract Text. Abstracts must not exceed the 250 word limit.
NOTE: Please print a copy of the abstract submission form for your records.
All abstracts will be reviewed as they are submitted.
Please ensure your abstract is the final copy, as no changes can be made to the abstracts once they have been submitted.
Please note: All accepted abstracts will be published in the AFMW Congress Proceedings and will be available on the website post Congress. The Congress Managers will not be held responsible for abstract submissions not received via the website or for submission errors caused by Internet service outages, hardware or software delays, power outages or unforeseen events.
Scholarships and Prizes
Travel Scholarships
There are seven A$1000.00 travel scholarships available for which delegates may apply.
The applicants must:
- Be a female medical practitioner from the Western Pacific region
- Be nominated by an MWIA affiliated association
- Have a presentation that aligns with the Congress themes
- Have their presentation accepted by the scientific committee
- Work with or for an indigenous, rural or disadvantaged community in their country of origin
Please note: Preference will be given to oral presentations but posters will be considered
Medical Student Poster Prize
A prize will be given out to the best poster presentation at the AFMW Congress 2008. All entrants must present a current university student ID card to be eligible for the prize.
Posters must adhere to the following guidelines:
- The poster must be an original document
- The poster must align with the key theme of the Congress: ‘Women Doctors/Medical Students, Bridging Barriers in the Western Pacific’
- Author must be a male or female medical student or group of students
- The poster format should broadly include an introduction, aim, method, result, discussion and conclusion
- The poster can be qualitative or quantitative
- Preference will be given to posters related to improving the health/healthcare for disadvantaged communities
Judging Scoring Criteria
The following criteria will be used for scoring the presentations and posters:
- Relevance to Congress goal or themes
- Has a sound theoretical/conceptual basis
- Has demonstrated relevance of an important area of women and children’s issues or an important professional issue for women doctors
- Methods and approaches are rigorous and appropriate (research or program/project)
- Expected to be of regional relevance
- Interpretation of findings is sound and is based on data presented
- Lessons learned, impact of implementation and dissemination
General Policies and Requirements
Abstracts must adhere to the following guidelines:
- All abstracts must contain original work.
- The presenting author must submit the abstract.
- All abstracts must be prepared according to the guidelines and using the abstract template. Abstracts will be published exactly as they are submitted; there will be no opportunity for amendments after the submission deadline of 23rd July 2008.
- All submissions must be completed electronically via the online submission facility. If you are unable to submit in this manner, please contact the Congress Managers at medicalwomen2008@tourhosts.com.au or phone: +61 2 9265 0700 for further information.
- All fields on the online abstract submission form must be completed.
- Submission of an abstract acknowledges consent to publication of the abstract in the AFMW Congress Proceedings.
- All submitting authors will receive abstract notification by late August 2008.
- The presenting author will be required to register for the Congress in order to ensure their abstract(s) is included in the final program. Deadline for author registration is 28th August 2008.
Abstract Format and Layout Guidelines
- The purpose of the abstract is to define the precise subject of the presentation to an audience. Sufficient details of the study must be included in the abstract, so that others can confirm the findings.
- Abstract must not exceed a word limit of more than 250 words.
- Abstracts must be single spaced with a clear line between paragraphs. Do not use an indent to mark a new paragraph.
- Abstracts must be free of typographical and grammatical errors.
- Standard abbreviations may be used for common terms only. Otherwise, any abbreviation should be given in brackets after the first full use of the word. Abbreviations may be used in the title, provided the name in full is outlined in the body of the abstract.
- Scientific symbols must be spelt out in full English; symbols must not be used within abstracts.
Title
The abstract title should be short, informative and contain the major key words. It should be written in Title Case (upper and lower case).
Authors
The submitting author’s name will automatically be populated in the Author Details section. Please ensure that you enter any additional authors who are to be recognised along with their affiliations.
Affiliations / Institutions
Affiliations/Institutions should be typed under the list of authors’ names in the Affiliations section. Each author should indicate Institute, State and Country separated by commas.
For example:
Sunshine Company, NSW, Australia
If authors have more than one affiliation, enter each affiliation in a new box and enter the corresponding numbers in the Affiliation Numbers box separated by a comma.
Please note: The submitting author’s Institute will automatically be populated in the Affiliations section, however, the State and Country will not. Please ensure that the submitting author enters their State and Country manually beside their Institution.
Abstract Body and Author Email Address
The abstract body is to be entered in the Abstract Text section with a maximum word length of 250 words. The abstract should be written in Sentence case (capital letters at the beginning of sentences only).
The presenting author should provide their email address on the first line of the Abstract Text section, above the abstract body.
- Scientific papers are to include the headings of aim, method, results and conclusion.
- Non – scientific papers can be flexible in their layout and do not need to follow such a strict structure.
Poster Dimensions
Posters must be no larger than 1 metre wide x 1 metre in height (40 x 40 inches). Posters larger than these dimensions will not be displayed at the Congress.
